Educational Objectives:

  1. To support the educational needs of home health clinicians and coders in achieving proficiency in diagnostic coding;
  2. To facilitate coding competency exam prep for participants interested in the pursuit of the HCS-D certification

Day 1 – Coding Basics

  • Translating Clinical Terminology into ICD-9 Coding Language
  • Navigating the ICD-9-CM
  • Learning the Steps for Accurate Coding
  • Understanding Official Coding Guidelines
  • Recognizing Coding Conventions – Both Official and Publisher Specific
  • Discussing PPS Considerations & How to Score the OASIS ICD-9 Items
  • Demystifying V-Codes & E-Codes
  • Sequencing & Coding Diagnostic Statements

Day 2 – Intermediate Coding

  • Reviewing the Key Sections of the ICD-9 Coding Manual
  • Discussing the Impact of ICD-9 Coding on Medicare’s PPS & Beyond
  • Analyzing ICD-9 Coding Rules
  • Recognizing V Code Cautions & Implications for Their Use
  • Learning Special Considerations for the Use of Therapy Codes as of 12/2005
  • Updates for 2008
  • Group Exercises to Promote Learning and Stimulate Discussion While Coding Wounds, Co-morbidities, Diabetes, Fractures, CVA, Symptoms & 2008 Updates
  • Includes Valuable References & Resources Specifically for ICD-9 Coders
Workshop Presenter: Sparkle Sparks, MPT, HCS-D, COS-C
Sparkle is a physical therapist with 10 years of home health experience as a direct care provider, consultant, PPS analyst, staff educator, and OASIS and ICD-9 Coding trainer. She serves as an advisor for the Board of Advanced Medical Coding which created the Homecare Coding Specialist-Diagnosis (HCS-D) certification. Sparkle is a Senior Associate Consultant with OASIS ANSWERS, Inc.
